Medieval City of Provins Medieval Provins

This old part of the city is dominated by the 12th-century Tour César, a huge octagonal tower built on the site of a Roman fort. The town is particularly well worth visiting in June when it mounts a flower festival and mock-medieval feast. Nearby, the Grange aux Dîmes is a medieval tithe-barn built in the 13th century.

The Ramparts
The well-preserved ramparts still surrounding much of the Ville Haute (Upper Town) give Provins a permanently medieval air. Part of an impressive defence system of walls and ditches, the curtain wall is punctuated by small fortified towers. The turreted 12th-century keep, known as the Tour César (open to the public), with later pyramidal roof, originally formed part of the ramparts. There are falconry shows and medieval fairs in summer.

The Champagne Region

Champagne is a historic province in the northeast of France, best known for the production of the sparkling white wine that bears the region's name. The area is about 100 miles (160 km) east of Paris. There are five departments within the region: Aisne, Aube, Haute-Marne, Marne, and Seine-et-Marne. The towns of Troyes (capital of Champagne), Reims and Épernay are the commercial centers of the area. Most of Champagne is now part of the French administrative region of Champagne-Ardenne.
In the High Middle Ages, the province was famous for the Champagne Fairs.
